Electronics like cameras and accessories are my passion. So it's just natural that taking pictures a closely related obsession. In this section you will find both tutorials explaining photography technology (mostly digital) and galleries showing photos from my home area(s) -- North Carolina and Germany -- as well as the associated wild life and other objects.

Feature: Anne Fröhlich

penguinAnne is a scientist by trade and hobby photographer. After her studies in ornithology, she spends significant time in remote Antarctica (King George Island)-- an environment that's known for its breath taking beauty and extreme climate. Starting out as a way to document her study objects (birds) in the isolation of the Southern ice cap, she quickly developed a sense for the beauty of the simple beauty of the wild life in this extreme environment. Emporer penguins are well known but not the only attraction.

This gallery shows her eye for Nature's beauty despite the harsh environment in the icey paradise -- with breathtaking beauty yet fragile.

Digital Photography

Digital technology has truly revolutionized the amateur's ability to learn photography and quickly improve due to the virtually instant feedback. Quality is nowadays similar to 35 mm film technology and the freedom of processing electronic data a huge advantage over traditional technology. Yet, with all the simplifications, too many features don't make it easy to master the new technology. It's important to understand a technology's limitations and see beyond the marketing hype.

EOS30DOn an infrequent basis, I am reviewing the photo equipment I use. This includes everything from cameras and lenses, over filters and light meters all the way to software to process the pictures. Most pictures on this website were produced that way and give an overview of the technology used -- or at least examples for my ability to execute. ;-)

I am currently using a Canon EOS 20D and several Canon lenses and other tools. As technology progresses, this may change but my current setup is realistically a basis and a great picture more often depends on selecting the right subject, composition and lighting as well as timing. These are exactly the skills that make a photographer. The galleries below document my journey to a better self -- or at least photographer.
